Black out private info before you share a screenshot

Paste, drop or choose an image. Drag over anything private. Download a clean copy. No account, no upload, no watermark on the result.

✓ Runs in your browser ✓ Nothing uploaded ✓ No signup ✓ Works offline

Drop an image here — or paste from your clipboard (Ctrl/Cmd+V)

Screenshots from your phone, a support ticket, a bank statement, a chat thread — anything with a name, an email, an address or an account number on it.

Drag a box over anything private. Undo removes the last one. Your original file is never modified — the download is a new image.

This tool is free and always will be. Built by a teacher — if you want the other things I actually use in a classroom (seating charts, a schedule-aware timer, an annotator that draws on any page), they're $27 once, no subscription.

Straight answers

Does my image get uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read into this page and never leaves your device. There is no server that receives it, no storage, and no account — you can load the page and then go offline and it still works. That is the whole point of a redaction tool: the safest copy is the one that never travelled.

Is a black box actually safe, or can someone recover what's underneath?

A black box drawn onto the final image is safe — the pixels are replaced, not hidden. What you must never do is the thing most people do instead: draw a box in a screenshot tool that leaves the original text in a layer, or "blur" so lightly the text is still readable. This tool replaces pixels in the image you download. The force pure black option ignores any transparency and writes solid black, which is the belt-and-braces choice.

Blur or black — which should I use?

Black, when the information matters. Blur looks nicer and is fine for hiding a face or a background, but a determined person can sometimes recover a lightly blurred value. For account numbers, addresses, emails and anything else that would cost you if it leaked, use redact.

What is this for?

Anyone who has to share a screenshot with something private on it: a support ticket, a bug report, a bank statement for a dispute, a chat thread, a medical letter, a class roster, a client project, a bill. It is the difference between "send me a screenshot" being easy and being a small risk.

Do you want my email?

Not to use the tool. If you want the occasional heads-up about it, there is a form at the bottom of the page — but it is genuinely optional and the tool works exactly the same either way.

Want this with your brand on it?

If your team, your clients or your community send screenshots with sensitive information in them, you can run this under your own name and domain. Your audience, your brand, your pricing. I license the tool; you keep the money and I handle nothing of your customers'.

$149 for a 90-day pilot, then $297 for a lifetime licence if it works for you. One email, no call required.
